Brampton Accent & Feature Walls

Board-and-Batten Walls

Structured wall detail with spacing, height, and proportions selected for the room.

Board and batten brings clear rhythm and structure to a wall. It can feel traditional, modern, farmhouse-influenced, or highly minimal depending on the trim profile, spacing, height, grid, and paint colour.

Although the style is named for boards and battens, many interior installations use applied trim over a prepared drywall surface. The wall condition, desired finish, and selected material determine whether additional backing or full panel coverage is appropriate.

Board-and-batten layout options

Full-Height Vertical

Long vertical battens extend toward the ceiling and can emphasize room height. Spacing is planned so both outside edges feel balanced.

Partial-Height

A lower-wall treatment finished with a horizontal cap can suit dining rooms, entries, bedrooms, stairways, and hallways.

Square or Rectangular Grid

Horizontal and vertical members create repeated panels. Wall width and height determine the most balanced proportions.

Feature-Width Treatment

A centred or partial-width installation can frame a bed, desk, bench, television, or other fixed element.

Details that should be resolved before installation

  • Full height, partial height, or selected wall area
  • Top rail, wall cap, chair rail, or clean termination
  • Relationship between battens and the existing baseboard
  • Spacing around outlets, switches, corners, and door casings
  • Trim thickness relative to existing moulding
  • Paint colour, sheen, primer, and final-finishing responsibility
  • How the pattern aligns with the bed, table, bench, artwork, or other focal point

Room Planning

Choose a height that belongs in the space

Partial-height treatments should relate to the room rather than follow an arbitrary fraction of the wall. Ceiling height, furniture, window sills, switches, railings, and nearby trim all influence where the top line should land. Full-height layouts similarly need an intentional finish at the ceiling and both sides.

Do existing baseboards need to be replaced?

Not always. The answer depends on baseboard thickness, batten thickness, profile, and the desired transition. Options can include working to the existing baseboard, adding a lower rail, modifying selected areas, or replacing the baseboard where the scope permits. Photos and measurements help determine the cleanest approach.
